Eugene Nikolaevich Kondakov, professor: to the 60th anniversary of his birth

Doctor of Medical Science, Professor Eugene Nikolaevich Kondakov was 60 on October 21, 2005.

Kondakov E.N. graduated from the Novosibirsky State Medical Institute in 1969. He worked as a neurosurgeon in the Clinic of Neurosurgery of the Novosibirsky Research Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics for several years (1969-1973). His teachers were Professors K.I. Kharitonova, Ya.L. Tsyvyan and D.T. Kuimov.

In 1973 Kondakov E.N. was offered a postgraduate studentship in the Polenov Research Neurosurgical Institute. At first he was a junior researcher of the above Institute. Then he filled posts of a senior researcher, a head of the Department of Planning of Research Activity (1985). In 1999 he became a deputy director of the Institute, responsible for research and organizational work.

His thesis for a degree of a Candidate of Medical Science was entitled Patients with Severe Brain Contusions: Local Cerebral Blood Flow and pO2 in an Acute Period (1976). Kondakov E.N. studied disorders of metabolism and cerebral blood flow in foci of crushing and was the first to determine their topographic peculiarities. He ascertained regularities of these disorders and pointed at quite certain zones, which appeared in damaged areas and were characterized by a different degree of inhibition of indices under study.

Kondakovís research was extremely progressive for that time. As for its results, they were classic from the point of their reliability. It was proved by numerous studies of different researchers, who repeatedly obtained the same results.

The above regularities, revealed by Kondakov E.N., became prerequisites for rapid development of different methods of intraoperative diagnosis of focal cerebral lesions. They allowed to determine one of the main pathogenetic mechanisms of ď formationĒ of a crush focus and were an objective criterion of purposeful therapy. Potentialities of intraoperative diagnosis of focal cerebral lesions are described in the monograph Severe Craniocerebral Trauma (Intraoperative Diagnosis and Surgical Tactics), written in 1995.

In 1993 Kondakov E.N. defended his thesis for a degree of a Doctor of Medical Science. Its title was Diagnosis and Differentiated Tactics of Surgical Interventions in Severe Craniocerebral Trauma. It was devoted to use of unified estimation of trauma severity for solving such problems as standardization of craniocerebral trauma and complex quantitative analysis of treatment results and prognosis. Kondakov E.N. was the first not only to determine relationship between clinical signs and a definite character of changes, watched in topography of cerebral vessels in a preoperative period, but also to demonstrate its prognostic significance. Kondakov E.N. ascertained indications for liquor-shunting operations and a term of their performing in casualties with severe craniocerebral trauma.

He elaborated an original method of treatment of acute hydrocephalus and brain stem compression, which allowed to obtain a positive effect, when used in compliance with indications (Authorís Certificate N 1173996, a bronze medal of the USSR Exhibition of National Economic Achievements). Kondakov E.N wrote the monograph Intracranial Decompression in Surgery of Severe Craniocerebral Trauma, devoted to diagnosis and peculiarities of surgical treatment of brain dislocations; it was based on the above invention (1999).

He substantiated expediency of a differentiated choice of approaches in surgical treatment of patients with craniocerebral trauma.

While elaborating principles and tactics of performing reconstructive interventions in patients with sequelae of craniocerebral trauma, Kondakov E.N. created and introduced new surgical instruments and methods (Authorís Certificate N 772541, Authorís Certificate N 88970). Introduction of original methods with taking into account the main conception of traumatic disease development allowed to improve outcomes of interventions for sequelae of severe craniocerebral trauma.

Today these methods are used widely in practical activity of neurosurgical departments of the country and are studied both in medical Institutes and Institutes of postgraduate education. Further improvement of the conception, concerning ďformationĒ of a crush focus, was a goal of research in a great number of dissertations. The results, obtained by Kondakov E.N., were summarized in the monograph Severe Craniocerebral Trauma (A Functional-Structural Halo of a Crush Focus within the Brain and Versions of Surgical Treatment (2001).

The main trends of research, carried out by Kondakov E.N., include studying the following problems: cerebral circulation in craniocerebral trauma; a clinical picture, diagnosis and surgery of severe craniocerebral trauma; organization of neurosurgical service in the Russian Federation; training personnel; history of home neurosurgery. He does much for improving organization of neurosurgical care both in Saint Petersburg and Russia. It is worth to mention, that many regulations, concerning neurosurgical service, were elaborated with his participation.

Kondakov E.N. wrote a practical manual for improvement of medical care of casualties with craniocerebral trauma in general hospitals. It is entitled Craniocerebral Trauma (2002) and contains analysis of medical errors and information on foundations of surgical tactics.

Kondakov E.N. guided profound research in the field of organization of neurosurgical care in different regions and cities of the country, including Saint Petersburg. It resulted in accumulation of important epidemiologic data on prevalence of craniocerebal trauma and non-traumatic intracranial hemorrhages, as well as organizational peculiarities of rendering neurosurgical care and aspects, having a negative effect on its quality. They are presented in the monograph Neurosurgery of Saint Petersburg (2003).

Large-scale organizational-epidemiologic research in incidence of craniocerebral trauma in the Republic of Tyva was carried out under Kondakovís guidance. The obtained results laid down the foundations of the order, issued by the Ministry of Public Health of this Republic and aimed at improvement of medical care of casualties with trauma of the nervous system. These data are given in the monograph, published on the initiative of its government (2004).

Kondakov E.N. is an author of 215 scientific works, published in our country and abroad, 11 monographs, 3 books of a bibliographic character, 10 manuals for doctors and students. He has 8 authorís certificates for his inventions and patents.

Kondakov E.N. is a member of both the Scientific Council of the Polenov Research Neurosurgical Institute and the Dissertation Council, a scientific secretary of the Neurosurgery Section in the Scientific Council of the Russian Ministry of Public Health, a member of editorial boards of such magazines, as Voprosy Neirokhirurgii, Neurosurgery and Childrenís Neurosurgery and Neurology.

Conferences, known as Polenov Readings and carried out in the Polenov Research Neurosurgical Institute, has been organized on his initiative.

Kondakov E.N. received several diplomas and a bronze medal of the USSR Exhibition of National Economic Achievements for his research and public activity. He was elected an Hononary Member of the Moscow Neurosurgical Society (2001) and a member of the Board of the Association of Russian Neurosurgeons (1995-2005).

Significance of research, carried out by Kondakov E.N., a high level of his reports and a great contribution into practical public health made him and his co-authors winners of the State Prize of Russia in the field of science and technology (2004).
