A Report on the III Congress of Russian Neurosurgeons

The III Congress of Russian neurosurgeons was held at the Medicomilitary Academy
(Saint Petersburg, Russia) on June 4-8, 2001.

There were 5 academicians, 10 writing members, 167 professors, 131 Doctors and 520 Candidates of Medical Science, who participated in the Congress.

The scientific program included 5 plenary and 15 sectional sessions. A total number of reports was 503 (27 reports on general problems and 476 sectional reports), embracing all areas of neurosurgery:

There were 4 satellite symposia. Their topic were as follows:

  1. Temodal in Treatment of Malignant Gliomas and Metastases of Solid Tumors into the Brain.
  2. Use of a Laser in Low-Invasive Surgery of the Brain and Spine. Percutaneous and Endoscopic Laser Diskectomy.
  3. Problems of Hemostasis in Neurosurgery.
  4. Glue Composites in Neurosurgery.

The exhibition of medical equipment, organized in parallel with the Congress, took place on June 4-8 and demonstrated products of 50 big firms, working in the field of neurosurgery both on foreign and home markets. They were represented by 30 Russian firms, 4 companies from the former countries of the USSR (Byelorussia, the Ukraine, Latvia) and 16 foreign firms (USA, Great Britain, Germany, France, Luxemburg, Portugal, Japan).

The Congress summed up the results of the First All-Russian Competition of Young Neurosurgeons. Its prize winners were given diplomas, memorable medals and bonuses.
