Head of the Department - Doctor of Medical Science, Prof. Kondratiev Anatoly Nikolaevich

The Department was founded in 1962 on the initiative of Director of the Institute, Prof. Ugriumov V.M. It included a postoperative ward and a group of anesthesiologists. In December 1980 the Scientific Council of the Institute decided to organize a multi-structural department of anesthesiology and resuscitation which would correspond to the level of neurosurgery development. The 12-bedded department equipped with modern apparatus and having its own laboratory of express-diagnosis and electrophysiology was opened in 1981. A great contribution into organization of this department was made by Doctor of Medical Science Raevsky V.P. and Candidate of Medical Science Kapustin S.M. In 1987 Candidate of Medical Science Kondratiev A.N. was appointed its head (today he is a Doctor of Medical Science, professsor). The main trend of research is development of methods ensuring good anesthesiologic support and intensive care of neurosurgical patients.

The activity of physicians of the Department resulted in:

- detailed study of diencephalic-catabolic syndrome and the difference between it and a postoperative stress reaction;
- development of an original system of anesthesiologic support of operations on the brain;
- development of the so-called "moderate vegetative block";
- working out recommendations on intensive care of patients with a different course of posttraumatic disease;
- carrying out research for estimation of clinical-physiologic manifestations of various types of brain dislocation;
- development of a method for prevention of recurrent hemorrhages from ruptured arterial aneurysms together with the Department of Pathology of Cerebral Vessels;
- development and introduction of a method of combined administration of an opioid analgesic and L2-adrenoagonist with a central effect in anesthesiologic support of neurosurgical operations.

The main trends of clinical activity are anesthesiology, resuscitation, elentrophysiology. laboratory diagnosis.


Up-to-date methods of anesthesiologic support in neurosurgical operations are developed and introduced. Today operating rooms are equipped with modern respiratory and monitoring systems manufactured by Siemens. It allows to ensure good anesthesiologic support during complex interventions of long duration and a high degree of reliability and safety of a patient. When diagnostic procedures are carried out anesthesiologic teams work not only on the territory of the Institute but also outside it. An average annual number of anesthesias given during operations, manipulations and diagnostic procedures is equal to 1200. Leading Researcher, Doctor of Medical Science Savvina I.A. is responsible for the work of this unit.


The 13-bedded resuscitation unit provides intensive care and control of a patient's state in a postoperative period, resuscitation measures and care of cases in critical condition. It is equipped with modern respiratory and monitoring systems manufactured by Siemens. They permit to administer prolonged anesthesia choosing an individual regimen of assisted and forced artificial ventilation and to control hemodynamic and respiratory indices, gas composition on in- and expiration.

There is reduction of mortality of neurosurgical patients caused by:

- introduction of original methods of postoperative treatment dependent on localization and histological structure of tumor;
- wide use of Triple-H therapy in cerebral ischemia;
- use of antifibrinolytic therapy in hemorrhages due to aneurysm ruptures;
- use of liquorosorption;
- regular prevention and adequate treatment of pulmonary complications.

One of the new trends of the unit activity is rehabilitation of patients in a vegetative state caused by CNS lesions of different etiology. Resuscitation service for control of sick children and their treatment not only in the resuscitation unit but also in the Children's Department was organized in 2000. Senior Researcher Ivchenko I.M. is responsible for the work of the unit.

Laboratory of Electrophysiology

It was reorganized and attached to the Department of Anesthesiology and Resuscitation in 1987. EEG control during neurosurgical interventions and in a postoperative period is carried out on a regular basis. Great attention is paid to dynamic observation of patients in a vegetative state and with posthypoxic encephalopathy. The employees of the Laboratory register and analyze EEC, ECG both of in- and outpatients. Senior Researcher, Candidate of Medical Science Fadeeva T.N. is responsible for the work of the unit.


It was organized simultaneously with the Department of Anesthesiology and Resuscitation. The laboratory works on a twenty-four-hour basis carrying out biochemical and clinical examinations of blood, urine, liquor of patients of the Department of Anesthesiology and Resuscitation, other departments or cases taken to an operating room. The principal scientific trend is study of coagulation problems. Alekseeva A.S. is responsible for the work of the unit.

The Department of Anesthesiology and Resuscitation pays great attention to postgraduate education. Doctors from different hospitals of Saint Petersburg and regions of Russia are trained in it.
