Vladimir Anatolyevich Shustin is a talented scholar and clinician in the field of neurology, neurosurgery and psychiatry, a veteran of the Great Patriotic War, Doctor of Medical Science, Professor and retired colonel. Neurosugical and neurological community celebrated the 80th anniversary of his birthday in November 2004.
V.A. Shustin was born on November 5, 1924 in Leningrad. He was a participant of the Great Patriotic War, decorated with a medal For Combat Services. After graduation from the Navy Medical Academy he worked as a surgeon in medical establishments of the Navy (1947-1952). In 1952 V.A. Shustin was transferred to the Clinic of Neurosurgery of the Navy Medical Academy, where he worked during 15 years. Later he was an attending doctor, a lecture and senior lecture in the Medicomilitary Academy.
In 1956 V.A. Shustin defended his thesis for a degree of a Candidate of Medical Science, which was entitled Novocain Disinhibition and Its Possible Importance in Neurosurgery. He participated in development of the system of rendering medical care to casualties with combat injuries of the nervous system by order of the Ministry of Defense. In 1956-1957 V.A. Shustin was a medicomilitary adviser in Syria. He was decorated with the highest military order of this country for his activity.
V.A. Shustin studied lumbosacral osteochondrosis and was a pioneer in developing surgical methods of treatment of its complicated forms in Russia. It was a basis for choosing a subject of his thesis for a degree of a Doctor of Medical Science, entitled Discogenic Lumbar Radiculitis (A Clinical Picture, Diagnosis and Surgical Treatment) and defended in 1964. His monograph Discogenic Lumbar Radiculitis, based on the thesis results and published in 1966, was the first book on this problem in the USSR. It has not lost its importance up to now and is a reference book for many neurosurgeons of our country.
V.A. Shustin, being a colonel of Medical Service, retired from the Army in 1967. Then he worked as an Assistant Director of the Polenov Research Neurosurgical Institute during 16 years and was a Neurosurgeon-in-Chief of Leningrad. The sphere of his research interests embraced problems of neurotraumatology, surgery of vascular lesions of the brain and spinal cord, proton therapy of brain tumors, use of HBO in neurosurgery.
In 1983 V.A. Shustin became a head of the Department of Surgery of Nervous and Psychic Diseases in the Bekhterev Research Institute of Psychiatry and Neurology. Today he is a Chief Researcher of this Institute.
Successful development of problems of functional and stereotaxic surgery of epilepsy and some drug-resistant psychic disorders was carried out under his guidance. Results of long-term research in the field of psychic disorders in epilepsy, their dynamics against a background of treatment, choosing optimum methods of surgical treatment of this pathology were analyzed. The Ministry of Public Health appointed him a supervisor on problems of multimodality treatment of epileptic patients.
V.A. Shustin is an adherent of traditions of V.M. Bekhterev and L.M. Puussep, who were the founders of the Clinic, headed by him. Thus, he continued research in versions of surgical correction of some psychic diseases, using a new level of knowledge and technical possibilities. First of all, it concerned obsessive-compulsive states, Gilles de la Tourette’s disease, etc. This research resulted in publication of the monograph Surgical Correction of Some Psychopathologic Disorders in 1997. It was the first book in our country, devoted to this pathology. The Clinic accumulated initial experience, demonstrating efficacy of intracerebral neurotransplantation in patients with marked oligophrenia and hallucinosis, incurable with drugs.
V.A. Shustin is an author of more than 200 scientific publications and inventions. It should be mentioned, that 4 theses for a Doctor's and 12 theses for a Candidate's degree were defended under his guidance. Владимир Анатольевич Шустин является автором свыше 200 научных работ и изобретений. Под его руководством были выполнены 4 докторских и 12 кандидатских диссертационных работ.
A Course of Neurosurgery, given at the Medical Faculty of the Saint Petersburg State University named after M.V. Lomonosov, has been headed by V.A. Shustin since 1999.
V.A. Shustin is an Honorary Member of the Saint Petersburg Association of Neurosurgeons and Neurologists and the Association of Russian Neurosurgeons. He has many home and foreign decorations, including An Excellent Worker of the Public Health System.
