Valery Evgenyevich Parfenov was 55 on February 1, 2005. He is the Chief of the Chair of Neurosurgery in the Medicomilitary Academy, Chief Neurosurgeon of the Russian Ministry of Defense, Winner of the State Prize of the Russian Federation (2003), Honored Doctor of the Russian Federation, Doctor of Medical Science, Professor, colonel of Medical Service.
V.E. Parfenov graduated from the Novosibirsky Medical Institute in 1973. He was called for military service in 1974. V.E. Parfenov was a junior doctor of the regiment (1971-1976), an attending medical doctor of the garrison hospital (1976-1978), a senior attending doctor in a neurosurgical department of the district military hospital (1978-1980) and the Chief Hospital of the Group of Soviet Troops in Germany (1980-1984). He became an advanced student of the Chair of Neurosurgery of the Medicomilitary Academy in 1984. Later V.E. Parfenov was the lecturer and then the Deputy Chief of this Chair (1994). He filled the post of its Chief in September of 2000.
V.E. Parfenov was one of the first doctors, who mastered methods of non-invasive diagnosis of cerebrovascular diseases with transcranial Doppler. He summarized the results of investigations in his thesis for a Degree of Doctor of Medical Science, entitled Transcranial Doppler in Neurosurgery (1996). V.E. Parfenof acquired the status of a professor in 1997.
The main trends of his research and clinical activity are neurotraumatology, pathophysiology of cerebral circulation, neurooncology, intracranial and intravascular methods of treatment of patients with cerebrovascular pathology, trauma and diseases of the spine and spinal cord. V.E. Parfenov is an extremely qualified neurosurgeon and a doctor of the highest category, who has mastered almost all methods of surgical treatment of diseases of the central and peripheral nervous systems.
Professor V.E. Parfenov is a lecturer with an experience of 20 years. He runs seminars and delivers lectures to attending doctors, students of faculties of postgraduate and additional education and student of faculties of doctors training.
At the same time the Chief Neurosurgeon of the Russian Ministry of Defense is engaged in active research and guides its most important trends in the field of neurosurgery. He is an author of more than 180 articles and teaching manuals. Two theses for a Degree of a Candidate of Medical Science were defended under his guidance and three new works are being prepared for defense.
V.E. Parfenov takes an active part in public activities. He was a Scientific Secretary of the Russian Association of Neurosurgeons and a member of the Board of Neurosurgical Societies of Saint Petersburg and Leningradskaya District in 1998-2002. V.E. Parfenov is a member of editorial boards of such magazines, as Neurosurgery and Russian Neurosurgery. Being a member of the Scientific Council, responsible for estimation of theses, V.E. Parfenov takes an active part in certification of researchers.
His tireless activity brought him deep respect of his colleagues and warm-hearted gratitude of many patients.
